Pre-Feasibility Study of the rehabilitation/upgrade of Durress Elbasan raiway link
The overall objective of the Project is to contribute to the rehabilitation of the Rail Corridor VIII in the territory of Albania, which shall result in improved transport connectivity, reduction of road traffic congestion, decrease of transit traffic in cities and reduction of the urban pollution due to vehicles emission. The Project, in conjunction with the activities on the Corridor VIII in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, is of regional importance.
The purpose of the Project is to carry out a Pre-Feasibility Study of the rehabilitation/upgrade of Durres – Pogradec railway link and of a new railway link between Lin (Albania) and the border with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, as well as a Feasibility Study, including Preliminary Design, on at least one section (sections to be identified as indicated below) of the Rail Corridor VIII in the territory of Albania.
The Pre-Feasibility Study’s results were completed as part of Phase 1 of the project, so as to enable an informed decision by the Government of Albania to proceed with the appropriate Feasibility Study, based on the selected options for development and implementation.
The Pre-Feasibility Study for the rehabilitation of the existing railway line and the construction of the link to the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, through WBIF grant, allowed the Government of Albania to have a clear picture of the preferred option for the investment based on preliminary estimates of its technical and economical viability, and consider at the same time useful tools to bridge the infrastructure investment gap and improve the overall efficiency of public spending in this sector.
